The Best Diamond-Mind League Around?

Ahhhh the quest to find the perfect fantasy baseball league. Where does one begin? How do you find a league that best suits you and everything a fantasy baseball nut like me wants? Well let me tell you.

As a high school player with a little bit of talent and tabbed "The Natural" in the local papers because of my last name, I didn't grow as big as I needed to be to make it to the "show". As it became apparent that my baseball career would end after a tryout for the Toronto Blue Jays, I found another passion: Fantasy Baseball. It just so happened that the ASB director at my high school was involved with a fantasy league using a game called "Pursue the Pennant". In 1988, when one of the teachers that normally played dropped out, I was asked to fill in for a weekend of playing games. You see the league would get together once a month and play for an entire weekend, knocking out each month's games head-to-head. What fun this was! I was the interim manager for the Lake Wobegon Whippets and my best player was a catcher named Bill Schroeder (.332 avg 14 hrs in 250 abs) who happened to have one great year. After a weekend of playing, I was hooked.

After graduating high school I lost touch with the league. I no longer had time to sit and play as I went away to college. I dabbled with Yahoo! leagues and all that, but for some reason could not find another league like that one in high school. Some 16 years later, I decided to try it again and did some research.

What was I looking for I wondered? So I made a list of the things that were really important to me:

  • Realism
  • Emphasis on Head-To-Head Play
  • Great Web-Site
  • Longevity of League
After finding out that the Diamond-Mind Baseball Game was the game of choice for realism, I went to their website and looked for leagues. The I saw the name: Thunder Bay Baseball League. Cool name, let's check it out. WOW! Best Website I had seen of any of the leagues I had checked out. Amazing, was all I could think as I checked out all the links and the "extras". This was definitely a league I wanted to be a part of. All I needed to see now was if the rules were what I was looking for. Perfect match. Drafts, keepers, head-to-head games, and minor-league draft choices were all I needed to see. After one e-amil, I found out there was no room!

Then came that day when I went into the Diamond-Mind Forums and looked inside the League Recruiting threads....and there it was: Thunder Bay Looking for Owners. Immediately, I e-mailed Rob, told him I wanted in. Told him it didn't matter how bad my team was, I wanted to be a part of the league. 2 Days Later, I was in. Now I know some of you must be thinking what a nerd I must be, and you would be right. However, there doesn't seem to be any comparison to the web-site and all the extras and fun things the TBBL has to offer. I have looked, believe me. You guys have something special here, let's have a great year...

Oh yeah.......so far, this IS the best diamond-mind league around that I have seen. Well done Rob...
