THUNDER BAY -- With the recent uproar over a couple of trades in the past few years, I thought it would be a good time to review some of the trades made in the TBBL over the past few years.  From 2004 through the end of the 2007 season, a total of 129 trades have been made, an average of nearly 33 per season.  One thing that jumps out is the amount of trades made by certain teams as displayed below:

Total Trades
Team # of Trades Percent
Kentucky Wildcats 41 31.78%
Jersey Damage Inc. 23 17.82%
LA Halos 20 15.50%
Florida Devils 18 13.95%
Trade Totals 129 2004-2007
Some of the largest trades have taken place in the July each year.  One team who has consistently traded for, and traded away stars have been the Los Angeles Halos.  In 2004, the Angels (Halos) hooked up with the Confederates in a deal that sent Vladimir Guerrero to the Angels and Johan Santana to the Confederates.  The Angels also traded away Prince Fielder later that year.  Late in 2005, the Halos and Confederates hooked up again as the Halos reacquired Johan Santana for Mark Mulder, Jose Guillen and others.   In 2006, the Halos acquired MVP Alex Rodriquez from the Florida Devils showing once again they are targeting big time players.

Some of the more lopsided trades in the history of the TBBL are listed below.  While it is always difficult to predict how a young player's career will turn out, perhaps the trade that would be most wanted reversed is BJ Upton and Bobby Jenks for Aubrey Huff.  Upton has a huge upside while Huff's best days are behind him.  Other trades which wound up providing a large advantage was Luke Scott for Troy Tulowitski.  Tulo is only in his 2nd year but many believe he can be one of the best SS in the game year in and year out.

Players Trade Year Analysis
Matt Cain from Norsemen Rafael Palmeiro from Jersey 2004 Palmeiro was traded in July of 2004 to the ASGard Norsemen (LA Halos) for Matt Cain.  Since the trade, Cain has blossomed into one of the better young pitchers in the game while Palmeiro is hiding in a cabin in the woods after being shunned for steroid use. Palmeiro finished up with 30 HR combined in 2004-2006 after the treade while Cain was dealt to and from the Florida Devils.  Cain was 11-14 with a 5.60 ERA in 2007.
John Smoltz from Jersey Jake Westbrook from Richmond 2004 Smoltz has compiled a 41-17 record since his trade in 2004 while Jake Westbrook has been 33-31.
Prince Fielder, D'Angelo Jiminez, JT Snow and Jason Jennings from LA Angels Nick Johnson, Mark Bellhorn and John Thompson from Beartooth 2004 Fielder blossomed with 34 HR and 100 RBI in 2007 for Beartooth while Nick Johnson has been out with injuries the past few years.
Mark Mulder, Jose  Guillen, aaaScott Olsen & aaaAnthony Reyes from LA Halos Johan Santana and aaaMike Hinckley from Stn Mountain 2005 Ouch!  Trading Santana should have netted a better result, but Mulder has been injured and Reyes and Olsen have yet to come into their own.  Jose Guillen has been productive, but Johan has gone off the charts (43-19) since the deal
BJ Upton and MIC Rd 1 (Bobby Jenks) from Michigan Aubrey Huff from Midlothian 2006 Huff has declined each of the last two years while Upton has become a fantasy stud, playing both CF and 2B.  To add to the deal, the pick traded netted Midlothian Bobby Jenks.
Troy Tulowitski from Carefree Luke Scott from Newark 2007 The Eagles got a steal of a deal acquiring Tulo for the now 30 year old Scott.  Scott hit a few homers last year, but Tulowitski became a man in the National League among shortstops.
Matt Weiters from Kentucky Craig Biggio from Osama 2007 Rocky isn't usually on the bad end of trades, but this one could wind up being just that.  While Weiters hasn't played a game in the bigs yet, Biggio has retired and really provided very little to Kentucky in 2007.
