2010 Season Preview

The Thunder Bay Baseball League is about to begin their 7th full season of operation.  In each of the first six seasons, the TBBL has crowned 6 different champions (Richmond, Los Angeles, Kentucky, Chemung, Carefree and Philadelphia).  Could 2010 be the first year a repeat champion is crowned?

The defending champions are back in 2010 with a very similar team.  The Smackdown will have their work cut out for them if they plan on repeating in 2010 as their division is very strong.

We have a new owner once again in 2010 as the Ridgewood Loggers have been transitioned to John Lapham and are now called the Glenview Flyers.  The former owner Mark Phelps has been dealing with a medical issue and the TBBL Family wish him well.  This was just our 3rd owner change since 2007, a telling sign about the structure of owners within the TBBL.

In this preview as a sidebar, I decided to look at the history of "Who's Your Daddy -- TBBL Style" and the table below shows some of the team versus team records of our owners.  The team with the most victories against another franchise is the Moon Raiders, who own a 74-44 against the Osama Camel Camp.  Several other teams have more than 70 wins against one franchise including Kentucky v. Michigan, Stone Mountain v. West Orange, Chemung v. Ridgewood and Lincoln v. Michigan.  The only team in the history of our league to go undefeated against another club in the same season was Stone Mountain (12-0) against Frostbite Falls in 2006.

Each year, this Season Preview allows me to take a look at each team and forecast where they may end up at the end of the season.  The table to the right displays how my forecasting ability did in 2009.  I picked the Crawdads to win it all in 2009 (they might be my pick until they win again!) and just like 2008 I was wrong.  I did manage to pick all four division winners however.

My sources are telling me that in 2010 the TBBL will have their first repeat champion in the Los Angeles Halos.  The Halos look great on paper and should make it back to the World Series as the American League representative.  The National League will be represented by ... CARTERET's FINEST Mike Witkowski and the Newark Eagles.  This is the first time I have picked Mike's team to win his league and the pressure begins as soon as he finishes this sentence.  I am also predicting that my team will run away with his "Iron Fist" fantasy baseball league this year.  Mike should just write the check to me today and save on the drawn out, painstaking time the league will have watching my team dominate.

On February 25, 2010, we ran our annual season simulation.  There is a link to the simulated finish in each teams report below.  The season was simmed using computer generated manager profiles for all teams with regard to player ratings or team supplied manager profiles.

In 2010, I received just 13 owner originated manager profiles.  11 teams MP's were simmed.  This percentage needs to improve or I cannot spend as much time on the preview. is the direct link for the sim results.

The final simulation DB is located here for anyone who wants to download it.

Our comments are made for fun, I hope everyone can enjoy them while reading.

On the Farm: Angel Villalona, Carlos Triunfel, Austin Jackson, Desmond Jennings, Will Inman, Andrew Brackman, Jarrod Parker, Brett Wallace, Aroldis Chapman and Tim Alderson
Strengths: At least this team won't be the higest salary team in the TBBL in 2010, and we surely won't be a playoff team.  Some good pieces to build on for 2011 when Jersey comes back into the playoff mix.
Weaknesses:   Lineup is really lacking some power and the pen as of this article is made of up has beens.
Worst Trade: 10/15/05:  DAM traded Curtis Granderson and Gavin Floyd for Jeremy Hermida
Worst Trade 2: 11/6/06: DAM traded Zach Grienke, Adrian Gonzalez, Andre Ethier, and JER 2 for David Ortiz and Scot Shields ... what the hell was I thinking!!!
Prediction: 6th place.  By far my worst team, will finish last.  My trade history stinks.  Could we go back to 2007?

Strengths: The offense is very good for Los Angeles and the starters are decent; Mariano at the back end of the pen is second to none; staff may pitch above their heads
Weaknesses:   Outfield isn't great defensively and lacks some power; hard to find weaknesses
Best Trade: 10/14/04:  LAH traded Moises Alou for Mariano Rivera ... best closer of all time
Prediction: 1st place.  The Halos should win the division again and surpass 100 wins.

Weaknesses:   The starting staff may be the weakest in years with old reliable Livan Hernandez knocking on the door for a spot
Best Trade: We don't make any stinking trades!!!
Prediction: 5th place.  Offense is too good to let this team slip out of the top 3 but I think the rebuild plan has started.  Team slipped a little behind FLA, MID and VOL.

Worst Trade: 2/1/07:  FLA traded Matt aaaWeiters to for a Rd 13 pick!!!

Best Trade: 10/19/05:  MID traded Aubrey Huff for BJ Upton and a RD 1 pick (Bobby Jenks)
Prediction: 3rd place.  Every year I struggle with Matt's team.  On paper they look mediocre (IMO) but always seem to win out in the end.  Predicting 3rd but who knows.

Best Trade: 7/1/09:  VOL traded Rd 2 and Rd 4 picks for Kendry Morales and Nick Welgarz
Prediction: 2nd place.  Jeff has done a really good job in his short tenure building what appears to be a playoff contender.  Team could finish anywhere between 2nd and 4th.

Worst Trade: 2/20/07:  KEN traded Matt aaaWeiters for an aging Craig Biggio ... 2nd time Weiters was dealt for next to nothing in this league!!!
Prediction: 6th place.  Class of the TBBL has slipped a bit in the past two years and 2010 looks to be a sub .500 season again.

Weaknesses:   The farm team is weak so if an injury occurs Julio Franco may be signed from the Mexican League
Best/Worst Trade: The staff at the TBBL did not see any trades that would have made the best and /or worst list.
Prediction: 2nd place.  Rats come up a bit short in quest for a Division Title but will be a solid playoff team

Best / Worst Trade: This has to be a record.  Jon Garland has been dealt to and from the Wildcats 3 times!!!  Troy Tulowitski for Luke Scott ... ouch!

Weaknesses:   Another title run for the Smackdown will depend on how good they play within their division.  There may be a power outage in Center City this year.
Worst Trade: 10/14/04:  ASG traded Mariano Rivera for Moises Alou.

Best Trade: 04/18/08:  COL traded Brian Bannister, Rd 2 and Rd 10 for Adrian Beltre and Erick Aybar
Prediction: 5th place.  Team is very close to becoming a force, need big seasons from Headley, Ichiro and Carmona.
Simulated Finish:  The Gladiators finished 6th in the AL West in the February 25 simulation.  Click here for team stats.

On the Farm: Pedro Alvarez, Starlin Castro, Cooper, Crow, Flores, Frederich, Kelly, Marcum, Ramos and Michael Stanton
Strengths: Has anyone looked at the rotation?  Are you kidding me?  Why didn't someone stop Brendan from drafting these guys.
Weaknesses:   Offense takes a step back in 2010; Reyes needs to get his hammy healthy
Best Trade: 12/29/08:  CHE trades Gomez,Sanchez and Perkins for Marcum, Nolasco and R. Weeks.  Decent deal for both sides.
Prediction: 5th place.  My run of picking Chemung to win it all ends in 2010; It's tough to pick against this rotation but offense will keep team out of playoffs.
Simulated Finish:  The Crawdads finished 4th in the NL East in the February 25 simulation.  Click here for team stats.

Trades: Team made one trade in franchise history prior to new ownership taking over.  Team has made 3 trades since ownership change in past 2 months.
Prediction: 6th place.  Rebuilding process began with new owners; Team should be better in 2011 and may play a key role at the trade deadline

Strengths: Balance from top to bottom with great offense; Braun and Tulo could be MVP candidates in the NL this year
Weaknesses:   Being in a tough division could be the only issue for the Eagles in 2010; Back of rotation could struggle once the splits come into play
Best Trade: 2 Trades: NEW traded Maine, Bruce and a 5 for Yovanni Gallardo and James Shields; NEW traded Luke Scott for Troy Tulowitski; owners beware, Mike is a trade shark!!!
Prediction: 1st place.  I don't think i have ever picked the Eagles to win the division but in 2010 they take flight; My pick to be the NLCS winner.

Weaknesses:   See last years comment on the middle of the road rotation; Pen is not strong
Best Trade: 11/15/07:  SMM traded A. Harang and A 6 for Hunter Pence and Clay Meredith.  Pence is a stud and has developed into a pretty good RFer
