2014 Season Preview
The
2013 Thunder Bay season came to a close right before the turkey hit the
table and the results were the same as the year before. Alan Lehman and
his San Antonio Saints took down Greg's Los Angeles Halos in a rematch of 2013
World Series. This was San Antonio's third franchise title and Alan is now
a perfect 2 for 2 in the TBBL. The Los Angeles
Halos won the American League pennant in consecutive years and further enhanced their spot among the league all time best teams.
We had several
owners leave the league during or after the 2013 season but have filled all open
spots and also ran through our first ever redistribution draft with the Eaton
Brothers (Jay and John). Some teams also moved from one league to another
and in 2014 the American League has both World Series participants as well as
the old Moon franchise moving into the East. Jeff Otteson has come over
and resides in the National League which will help balance out the trading since
Casey is over in the AL. I think they have made a combined 132 trades
since October already!

The
TBBL witnessed an All Time low (since expanding to 24 teams) in Trades
in 2013. The table below shows Trades and Transactions by Year
since the inception of the league. It's good to see that 2014 is
off to a great start as we have logged 42 trades so far.

Last year was a
clean sweep as I predicted every division winner correctly and overall 13 out of
the 24 slots were correct. The Beartooth Bitteroots were my
preseason pick to win it all but they fell short and the Saints went back to
back. Ryan Braun of Newark won the NL MVP (.317-57-157) as well as the
"liar, liar" award and Aramis Ramirez of Philadelphia won the AL MVP
(.319-34-137). Clayton Kershaw hung 20 wins on his opponents and was the
NL Cy Young winner (20-6,2.59-235K) and Jake Peavy of the Halos won the AL Cy
Young (22-4, 3.30-238K). Jeanmar Gomez of the Bombers and Homer Bailey of
the Wildcats each threw no hitters while Pedro Alvarez of the Crown Royals
smacked 7 HR in a single playoff series.

Mike Trout of the Paddlers has been the top ranked
player in each of the past two seasons but was Not Ranked (NR) in 2012 so his
average spot drops to #22. Miguel Cabrera has been ranked as the # 3
overall player in each year of the poll and based on that consistency is ranked
the #1 overall player in Baseball Right Now. My Jersey team leads the pack
with a total of 12 players on this list while the Newark Eagles have an NL
leading 10 players listed. The Nuts franchise has the top 2 players and 2
more listed in the top 10. The only team who is not represented on this list are
the Rock River Ravens (sorry Jeff).
The WAR stats continues to be my favorite
measure even though I still don't fully understand it. Rich Eisen of the
MLB Network has been battling it our with Harold Reynolds for the past 2 years
over this stat. It's clear that I side with Eisen as many of you know
from the web site that I like stats and try to get as much information online as
possible so once again the WAR and Salary chart are part of the preview. I utilize an Access
database with stats from www.fangraphs.com
and match it up to the TBBL rosters and below is this year's data:

The Protect Your Nuts franchise
(don't ask what the logo would look like) is clearly this year's Evil Empire.
Their opening day team payroll is north of $200,000,00! Last year the Halos had the
highest salary at just over $188 million but Scott's "win now at every cost
mentality" has pushed him to George Steinbrenner level. Okay, so Scott
never said that win now thing but with a collection of starters like Verlander,
Kershaw, Harvey, Hamels and Samardzija in their prime and Turner, Eovaldi,
Colome, Ventura and aaaHeaney coming this team is stacked. I have picked
his Osama franchise in the past as my preseason pick to win it all but in 2014 I
am sending a very special whammy out.
My predictions for the
2014 season are detailed below (in each teams capsule) but I will go on record
saying that the 2014 Champion will be the San Antonio Saints.
My pick may seem obvious but for the first time in many years my Jersey team is
heading into the season with high hopes and has a legitimate shot at a World
Series appearance so I want to put
the "curse" on the defending champ. The National League clubs were glad to see the
franchise which originated in Chemung head out of town this year and there are 3
teams who can make it to the show from the NL. The Beartooth Bitteroots,
Newark Eagles and Protect Your Nuts clubs should battle it out all year for the
right to face the Saints in next year's World Series. The Glenview Flyers
are also a team from the National League with high hopes heading into 2014.
The whammy will
now pave the way for my team to win it's first ever TBBL title ... Ok, so I can
dream a little but isn't it about time I bought one of those shiny plaques for
myself?

On February 28, 2014,
the annual season simulation was run. The table to the right shows the
final standings of the sim. There
is a link to your team reports in each grid. The Paddlers were the
best simulated team and one of 4 teams who won 100 games or more. The MVP of the sim
would have been Mike Trout of Mad City who had a stat line of .339-32-113 with
133 runs scored and 26 stolen bases.
Chris Davis of Colorado led the league with 61 homers while Christian Yelich of
Toronto hit a TBBL best .370. On the hill, Mad City had the Cy Young
Winner as well as Madison Bumgarner went 23-3 with 226 K's in 217 innings.
His ERA was 1.99 but was over used by 2 GS which derailed any hopes Scott had a
title (just kidding). Yu Darvish of the Crown Royals
led the league in strike outs with 313 and Koji Uehara of Glenview had a league
best 40 saves.
The following teams
contributed manager profiles for the sim: Beartooth, Emerald City, Capital
City, Colorado, Fort Wayne, Glenview, Hayward, Houston, Springfield, Los
Angeles, Jersey, Newark, Philadelphia, Rock River, San Antonio, Carolina, Stone
Mountain, Mad City, Gotham and Toronto. Smith Mills, West Orange, Protect
and Lincoln teams
had their manager profiles computer generated. There is a special Twitter
#Hashtag for each team in their capsule.

On the
Farm: |
Kyle Crick is the best of
the bunch followed by Mason Williams and a trio of
Angels (Lindsey, Green and Cron) |
Strengths: |
This is the best team on paper I
have ever had in the TBBL and the lineup is solid top to bottom;
Perhaps the best pen in the league with 3 closers and some very
good split guys |
Weaknesses:
|
The farm took a severe hit this offseason
and needs some help; The American League |
GM Thoughts: |
It
took a few years to get back to a good spot and I am
looking forward to the next 3 years which is my window
to win a title |
Prediction:

1st
place. The Crown Royals are going to be tough but I think this
club has what it takes to win 100 games and secure the
top spot in the East. #ThisIsMyYear |

On the
Farm: |
As a franchise, LA has not been a draft and develop type team as they practiced more of a draft and trade philosophy which has resulted in a rapidly aging roster. Finally age and injuries have forced the team into a rebuilding phase for the 1st time in their history. Unfortunately, before this strategy was implemented, they traded off their top prospect, Kyle Zimmer. This left them with only catching prospect, Jorge Alfero, whose bat continues to impress but still several years away and injured OF prospect, Rymer Liriano who looks to get back into form as a top 50 prospect as the only holdovers. Fortunately, prior to the draft the team was able to add one of the top OF prospects in Oscar Tavares and a top C prospect, Gary Sanchez. Tavares who reminds people of the greatest Halo of all-time, Vlad Guerrero, should make the ML roster next season and hopefully be there for many years. Sanchez could help the club starting next year as a DH and understudy to Yadier. In this year’s draft, the team picked up 4 more prospects: Mike Foltynewicz a SP who could be up in 2015, Alexander Guerrero a 2B from Cuba who could also be up next year, Rosell Herrera a power hitting ss/3b who might be a couple years away and Hunter Dozier a 2b/ss who is also a couple years away.
|
Strengths: |
Historically, the Halos have found regular season success with power bats, depth at starting pitching and an extraordinary bullpen. In 2014, Halos’ fans can expect to see none that! Injuries to Granderson, Hill and Teixeira plus the trading of Big Papi and Hanley is a loss of 136 homeruns from lineup. For the 1st time in franchise history the Halos are in full “rebuild-mode”, so 2014 looks to be a tough one for the fans. The good news is Yadi is still behind the plate and JJ Hardy is still at SS. Gardner who missed 2013 will return to CF in 2014 flanked by Aoki and Heyward to form a serviceable outfield. Newcomer, Chris Johnson, will hopefully be the answer at 3B while the platoon of LaRoche and Freese handle 1st base until Tex returns next season. The team is excited about the future potential of Mike Choice (OF) and Marcus Semien (INF) who will see some time with the big club in 2014 with the hopes of making meaningful contributions in 2015.
Last season was the 1st season ever that the franchise returned the same 5 starting pitchers which demonstrates, despite their success, how volatile starting pitching has been for the Halos. In 2014, the team took a new tack and will start their youngest staff ever with the hopes of building a more reliable staff. Sabathia, Morrow and Peavy are still here but battling injuries which will likely limit their time and effectiveness. That will leave the heavy lifting to: Jarrod Parker (25), Andrew Cashner (27), Wily Peralta (25), Ivon Nova (27) & Corey Kluber (28). In addition, the club is excited about the future potential of Erik Johnson who could see some spot starts this season. That is a bunch of arms for 5 spots so watch for more deals as the season progresses. The bully got a total rebuild for 2014 as Betancourt, Oliver, Gregerson and Pestano are all gone and in their places are: David Carpenter, Brian Matusz, Brett Cecil, Drew Storen. Casey Fien and Eric O’Flaherty are the only
returnees. With no clear choice at closer, the team will go with the dreaded “closer by committee”
|
Weaknesses:
|
This is a long list: not enough pop, major questions in the rotation, no true closer to name a few.
|
GM Thoughts: |
A second straight loss in the World Series to the Saints most likely ends a very successful run for the Halos as injury and age has done its damage. For the first time, the Halos aren’t heading into a season with championship expectations but rather the hope of playing “.500-ball” and somehow stealing a final wild card spot. With a little luck, some of the younger talent will develop faster than expected and allow management some flexibility at the trade deadline if the Halos are still hanging around at that time. If not, its wait until next season which could see the Halos return to form.
|
Prediction:
|
4th
place. The Halos run of Dominance may be over but this team
knows how to win and could be very dangerous come
October. Look for Greg to decide early if he has a
chance in 2014. I wanted to predict 3rd place but
just wasn't sure. #YearOfTransition |

Top prospect
Robert Stephenson,
Only a handful of pitching prospects possess two
potential plus-plus pitches, and he is a member of that
select group. His four-seam fastball has touched 100
mph, but his power curveball may be even more
devastating. His control and command took a significant
step forward in 2013, and he might not require much more
time in the Minors despite being just 20 years old.
Braden Shipley-
Former SS turned SP, D-Backs 2nd
ranked SP behind Bradley so kid can’t all too bad.
Projected # 2 or 3 SP.
Daniel Corcino had ugly 2013 as SP
at AAA 5.86 era, Fall league though lights out as RP,
with 12k / 1bb in 10ip, future RP.
Michael Gettys-
possible top 10 for 2014 draft,
amazing speed and phenomenal arm are main
assets plus plays the game ferociously. Great bat speed,
power developing, looks to be a more top of the order
utilizing his speed.
Braxton Davidson- another HS who
could be top 10 in draft-
put on a power show at the Tournament of
Stars in June, tying one record with two homers in a
game (including one estimated at more than 500 feet) and
setting another with three total at the event. Future
middle of order basher.
Matt Olson
1b/3b In first season at A ball,
23 hrs but BA .223, only 19 yrs old so room to improve,
ranked top 5 1b prospects by MLB.com.
Devon Travis
2b, each of first 2 seasons has BA over
.350, total minor .351/.418/.518 & .936 OPS, Kid can
rake. Top 5 2b prospect.
DJ Davis
OF, has blazing speed , with bat that’s
developing power, future CF leadoff hitter, 19 yrs old.
Jason Motte
RP,
returning from elbow surgery, could be setup man or
“stick a fork in him” |
Strengths: |
Votto ,Choo, Moss and Cozart will lead the
offense. While rotation is anchored by Homer Bailey, the #2 & 3
spots are solid with Jimenez & Lincecum. The bullpen is
excellent, closer Craig Kimbrel is “lights out”. Setup men JJ
Hoover, Breslow and Allen are very solid. Rest of pen is filled
out with McFarland, Street, Ondrusek, Hernandez. |
Weaknesses:
|
Overall lack of production from corner
OF, 3b, 2b. A lot of strikeout batters Reynolds,
Stubbs. #4 & 5 SP, Hellickson , Arroyo, Bauer and
Halladay on his farewell tour.
Hellickson and Bauer both young so
improved seasons possible. |
GM Thoughts: |
Having Votto, Moss and Choo will provide
bulk of offense especially. Top of rotation is good,
bullpen can keep us in close games and hopefully close
ones were ahead in. Outlook on season 75-86 wins,
playoffs a stretch, but if we did get into playoffs with
3 solid SP, bullpen in short series, could be
interesting, unless we faced a bunch of LHP. |
Prediction:
|
4th
place. Hayward takes over a squad that has
been at or near the top of the TBBL every year and will
look to get over .500 in 2014 and a possible playoff
appearance. The West is strong so a finish
anywhere from 3 - 5 could happen. #BigShoesToFill |

On the
Farm: |
Other
than the recently-graduated Wacha, I don’t really have
any sure-fire stars looming in the minors but I think
all my holdovers from last year are getting closer.
Thankfully, this isn’t a pressing need to be
competitive. Bell is looking good. Toussaint looks
like he could have a special arm by the time he is old
enough for the bigs. Hofman should be ready in a couple
of years. |
Strengths: |
Our hitting
should be tough, even without a true DH. We had nagging
injuries to so many hitters (Stanton, Bautista, Wright, etc)
that we’ll have to manage usage in the regular season but should
be ok in the playoffs. I have never had to put this many
platoons together with this team. |
Weaknesses:
|
We
went into the offseason without enough quality SPs. I
hated to give up on Rizzo, but felt like Lohse plugged a
hole and makes us a more dangerous team in the
playoffs. Nathan should be great as closer. Our names
in the bullpen are better than their stats. But I think
they should be ok and won’t be a glaring problem in the
regular season. |
GM Thoughts: |
Rob continues to run one of the very best
DMB leagues in the universe. He is on time with his
deadlines. His website is beautiful. And the league is
competitive with superb owners and has a feel of
continuity and history. If a friend asked which DMB
league to join, this one would be one of the first
couple I would mention. (Thanks Alan, the check is in
the mail) |

On the
Farm: |
The
farm has some top talents in Kris Bryant, Lucas Giolitto,
Raul Mondesi, and Marcus Stroman and is hoping for
breakouts from college catchers Max Pentecost and Kyle
Schwarber to push them up 2014 draft lists. At the
major league level, the team is hoping to see a full
year from Jurickson Profar to show why he was at the top
of prospects lists a year ago and from Neftali Feliz to
regain his status as one of the top relief pitchers in
the game (or at least to pitch more than 5 innings).
|
Strengths: |
After a strong 2013 season that
ended in heartbreak with a first round playoff loss, the 2014
Smackdown look like a .500 team at best with a shot at the last
wild card if things break right. Their strength is Stephen
Strasburg, Justin Masterson, and R.A. Dickey as the top three of
the starting rotation, but the back-end will be mixing and
matching guys that would be better off as long relievers (or on
the farm for the year). That starting three could be tough in
the playoffs, but gotta get there first, and that’s going to be
a challenge with this club. The bullpen is non-descript, with
Sergio Romo as the closer who is likely to contribute many a
blown save during the year. The offense is led by first round
pick Marlon Byrd, who will slot into the 3rd spot in
the starting lineup and be the team’s most productive hitter. |
Weaknesses:
|
After him, the lineup
isn’t going to scare too many pitchers, especially with
reigning AL MVP Aramis Ramirez only able to play for
half the season. Mark Trumbo might end up hitting the
round counting stats of 30 homers and 100 ribbies, but
only because he’ll probably approach 700 PAs near the
top of this weak lineup. |
GM Thoughts: |
So, put it all together,
and it looks like a middling season for the Smackdown,
with some promise for the future. |
Prediction:
|
3rd
place. Philadelphia usually sims well year after year so their
5th place finish might be an anomoly. #WrestlemaniaXXXHostHulkHogan |

On the
Farm: |
The Glads deftly restocked the farm
system during the draft, boldly dealing for a potential,
rotation-anchoring-horse, in Jonathan Gray. Colorado
also dealt for SS Hak-Ju Lee, and drafted 3 athletic OF
prospects, Cesar Puello, Domingo Santana, and Cuban-
Rusney Castillo |
Strengths: |
The 2014 Gladiators are retooled and, now led by two young
superstars, Chris Davis and Yasiel Puig, as well as a solid
pitching staff, an absolute necessity to compete while playing
half your games in Coors Field |
Weaknesses:
|
Lineup depth. Besides Puig and "Crush"
Davis, who is a monster, the rest of the lineup is
filled with role players, rather than stars, but
GM/Manager should be able to make it work, and add
reinforcements if they are still in the
hunt mid-summer. |
GM Thoughts: |
A disappointing 2013, after wiining 92
games and playoff series inb 2012, led to a rebuild for
2014. Veteran leaders Pedey, Konerko, and Aybar were
shipped out in return for youth, energy, and power!
Behind Iwakuma, Ervin Santana, Lackey, at the top of the
rotation, and a deep bullpen, the Glads look both to
rebuild AND win in 2014. Not an easy task but, we will
give it a go! |
Prediction:
|
2nd place. I think the NL West is the most
balanced Division and teams can finish just about
anywhere 2-3-4-5. Casey made 13 trades (and
counting) since 2013 ended! #TransactionFeesComing$$$ |

Jose Abreu ,
Delino Deshields Jr , CJ Edwards , Miguel
Alfredo Gonzalez , Tommy LaStella , Alex Meyer ,
DJ Peterson, Lucas Simms, Christian Bethancourt, Travis
d’Aranaud. Here is to hoping the two Cuban
players, Abreu and Gonzalez come through with a nice
2014 season. They are being looked at in the same way as
the “stud” JUCO players who sign to play D1 football.
Maybe one of them will come through like Cam Newton.
Travis d’Aranaud had a cup of coffee in 2013 and the
Confederates hope he stays healthy and battles for the
MLB ROY in 2014. Meyer and Bethancourt appear to be on
the cusp of an MLB splashdown. Edwards and Simms are two
arms that are making the top 100 cut on respected top
prospect lists. Although they are probably all at least
a year away, the Confederates are banking on future
performers: LaStella at 2b, DJ Peterson at 3b/1b, and
DeShields in the OF. |
Strengths: |
The
Confederates defense appears to be one of the team’s highlights.
With the exception of Michael Young the guys should be able to
field the routine stuff. I’m not sold on defense winning
championships in DMB; so I’m not so sure defense should be
classified as a strength. Got to find something! Strength for
the Confederates is the fact that they carry on their roster the
top 2 hit gathers in the history of TBBL. That’s right- Ichiro
and Michael Young will be wearing the Stars and Bars this year.
Unfortunately, it’s not 2004. On the bright side, a farewell
tour will be coming to a National League stadium near you as
Young will be hanging it up after the season. He is a lifelong
Confederate and held in the same regard as Robert E. Lee down in
Stone Mountain of Georgia. I don’t think there is a longer
tenured player with the same ball club in the TBBL. He was taken
in the 7th round of the inaugural draft and has sang
Dixie ever since. Again, I’m not so sure singing the praises of
guys more likely to dominant in shuffle board than on the
diamond should be called a strength. It makes for a good story
though. The team does have some road runners in the way of
Leonys Martin and Will Venable and Suzuki and still go. A move
to Turner Field should help the pitching staff keep the ball in
the park, and the bullpen should be improved from last year’s
disgrace. Offensively, the team has some guys with decent splits
which will hopefully pay dividends at the plate. |
Weaknesses:
|
The starters will
probably not go deep into games, which will tax the bullpen. Only one
starter threw 200 innings last year, AJ Griffin, and he led the league
in homers surrendered. The offense will not strike fear in any opponent.
I can’t imagine too many of the guys being pitched around or
intentionally walked. The team OBP is not a pretty sight. The bullpen
is going to need the extra 10% usage as they will see plenty of action.
The most glaring weakness for the Confederates is the GM. Now let us
hear from him. |
GM Thoughts: |
After
a 62 win campaign last season the team hopes to improve
on that mark by 10 games this year. Anything over 72
wins this season will be a surprise and should have the
Confederates manager in the running for MOY. The team is
looking forward to its new confines in Atlanta, Turner
Field. A team called the Confederates playing in
Wisconsin all these years was far from logical.
Hopefully, SMC hit on some prospects in the draft.
Finally, the Confederates might take their share of
lashings this year, but they will take solace in the
opinion that no state can offer more than their
homeland: GEORGIA-

On the
Farm: |
Jackie Bradley (cf) and Jake Odorizzi (sp) are ready for
regular jobs and will hopefully offer at least average
production at their positions. Garin Cechinni (3b) and
Chi-Chi Gonzalez (sp) are not far away from the majors
either and could also be solid contributors at their
position. Luis Heredia (sp), Lance McCullers (sp), Raimel
Tapia (of), Jon Denney (c), and Tim Anderson (ss) all
have potential but appear to be years away from
contributing at the major league level. |
Strengths: |
The bullpen.
Koji Uehara had a year for the ages and will be one of the top
closers in the league this year. The rest of the bullpen is
solid from both sides with great situational arms as well as
very good long relievers. |
Weaknesses:
|
Still no ace at the top of the rotation and the 4th and 5th
starters are questionable. |
GM Thoughts: |
2013
marked the first winning season and playoff appearance
since I took over the franchise. This year should be
even better, as the team used its farm system to address
key needs at c and 1b. Shelby Miller and Clint Frazier
were dealt before the draft for Jason Castro and a 3rd
round draft pick; Javier Baez, Jon Singleton and Nick
Swisher were dealt after the draft for Joey Votto and a
9th round pick in next year’s draft. Newark
is the front-runner in the division, but the Flyers
should be able to stay close and make their second
consecutive playoff appearance. Uehara and Kuroda, two
mainstays on the pitching staff, are nearing the end,
however. Hopefully some younger arms will emerge from
the farm to take their places. |
Prediction:

3rd

East this year? Adding Votto was a bold move.

On the
Farm: |
The Ravens start their first full year in
TBBL after taking over for the Seals. The team had many
needs but after a couple nice trades and a productive
draft things are looking up indeed. The farm system is
looking good for the future, but other than Michael
Pineda (who we hope hits the 2015 rotation) they will be
a couple years away from helping. Clint Frazier and
Austin Meadows look to be big parts of the outfield in a
couple years. Roman Quinn could be the SS of the future
and Eloy Jimenez and Brady Aiken are a ways out yet |
Strengths: |
The strength of the team will be defense, as
every position is manned by a competent glove. |
Weaknesses:
|
The team has one major weakness, power. Only one Raven
had over 20 HR last year and that was just barely. The offense has some
guys who can hit but we will need to get creative to score runs. The
pitching is a work in progress but should be much better with the
additions of Shelby Miller, Ricky Nolasco and Jeff Locke. |
GM Thoughts: |
In general, I’m looking forward to this
season. Realistically, the Ravens are not a strong
playoff contender in 2014. I do think though that if the
pitching comes through with a good year and the manager
is able to get a few creative runs that a .500 record is
in reach. At the very least I see us as a thorn in the
side of our division! |
Prediction:

On the

The Bombers are in year 3
of their total rebuild takeover and spent the offseason
trying to balance bringing on real-life usage talent
while not selling the farm, or at least while restocking
it at the same time. Their top 2 aaa players were
traded for Zunino and closer Greg Holland, in an attempt
to build a bullpen and to hopefully bring in the C of
their future. |
Strengths: |
They also shipped off Salvy Perez
for Austin Jackson and a pick, in order to provide a consistent
top of the order guy, while banking that Zunino will build on
last year's experience. The restocking of farm/younger guys
brought some potential with the TJ-survivors Jennry Mejia and
Casey Kelly. They also have top Brewers prospect Jimmy Nelson
and aaa shortstops Trea Turner, Luis Sardinas and Chris Taylor.
James Paxton should see a chance to enter the rotation this
year, and Matt Barnes is still a top SP prospect in the Red Sox
system. It was gratifying to see Straily and Ryu fulfill
expectations of top 3 round picks of last year and are going to
hold down the front of the rotation this year. |
Weaknesses:
|
The rest of the starters are going to be
part time guys who can hopefully build on their 2013 real life seasons
and provide a real rotation to the Bombers next year. As far as
positions players and the lineup go, the Bombers will again struggle to
put up runs, but should have better luck this year than last.
Youngsters Brad Miller, Marcell Ozuna, Derek Dietrich and Mike Zunino
will hopefully provide good young talent that the team can build off of
for years to come. While Dan Uggla and Paul Konerko were added to
provide AB's this year with the hopes of turning it around in 2014 and
provide some valuable playing time next year. |
GM Thoughts: |
The
bullpen should be able to lock down any leads that the
team brings into the late innings, in addition to
Holland, Ernesto Frieri, Michael Dunn and Ryan Pressly
should provide quality innings. And, if Joakim Soria
and Andrew Bailey come back to old form, next year's pen
could be very good. The GM is hoping that all of these
moves and additions mean that they can drop below 100
losses for the first time under the current rebuilding
plan, and can realistically shoot for a .500 record in
2015. The process has been arduous and the GM has been
patient so far, but will be tested this year if some
minor success doesn't come to fruition. |
Prediction:
|
6th place. Emerald City also moved to the
National League and will benefit starting in 2014.
Team has some work to do however. #YoungTalent |

On the
Farm: |
Beartooth traded away some farm depth by giving up Zach
Wheeler, Maikel Franco, and Nolan Arenado to fill holes
at the ML level. Both Austin Hedges and Blake Swihart
showed progress behind and at the plate last year giving
the team depth at the catching position or trade
material in coming years. The IF prospect strength was
increased by the addition of JP Crawford (great
bloodlines and I have big expectations for his
development) and Ryan McMahon, to go with Wilmer Flores
and Kolten Wong. The OF depth was replenished by the
addition of David Dahl and Philip Ervin. Trey Ball has
huge upside among the MiL SP prospects. Dylan Bundy is
recovering from TJ surgery; a return to his previous
number 1 prospect status isn’t guaranteed but I am
hopeful. Noah Syndegaard should be up during the season
pitching at Citifield for the Mets. |
Strengths: |
The trade
for Adrian Beltre filled the hole that ARods age and implosion
left on the team. The young OF with McCuthchen, Harper, and
Bruce is the heart of the team although a RH platoon OFer might
help. Prince fielder did not have his typical year at 1B but is
still solid. Brandon Phillips is as steady as they come at 2B.
Elvis Andrus ably mans SS. Cliff Lee heads the rotation. Newly
acquired Mariano Rivera will have his last hurrah in a Beartooth
uni. |
Weaknesses:
|
Starting pitching
is the biggest hole on the team. The trade for Colon helps to fill out
the rotation. Charlie Morton also adds some depth. However overall the
with the exception of Cliff Lee this rotation is just average. |
GM Thoughts: |
There were significant holes at 3B, SP, and in the
bullpen going into the 2014 off season. The decision to
not wait on Franco and Arenado at 3B was driven by a
desire for success now but resulted in giving up a lot
in likely future performance. Colon’s performance at
his age is good for this year but who knows what
performance level he will reach in his age 42 season.
Hopefully Syndegaard, Bundy, and Ball will develop
(although it will be a few years for Ball) to strengthen
Beartooth’s biggest weakness. |
Prediction:
|
3rd
place. My 2013 pick for Champion won't
disappoint in 2014. Look for Beartooth to play at
least 2 rounds into the post season. #BestOFinBaseball |

On the
Farm: |
Drafting Lake, Villar and Stassi can
hopefully start to solve some of the teams problems. |
Strengths: |
Well things a going with the Komets. It's been a struggle to
build long term when you have holes and have to fill those as
well as build a farm system up as well. Little by little we've
added some pieces each year through the draft and hope to one
day not be drafting in the top 10 pick annually.
|
Weaknesses:
|
Hopefully we've added enough depth this year and more than a few guys
pan out and take that next step up this year. |
GM Thoughts: |
Adding the arms like Salazar, Siegrist,
Warren to the likes of Corbin, Medlen and Rosenthal will
hopefully help. The pitching finally looks good, it's
the bats that need some work. |
Prediction:
|
5th
place. Stan has improved his team quite a bit
and could compete for a playoff spot.
