Biographical Information |
I
live in San Francisco, some 10
years now, and absolutely love
it. But at least I had the good
sense to be born and raised in
New Jersey... I left for
Philadelphia right after high
school, where I went first to La
Salle and then Temple, finishing
in '73. I also met my wife here
(at a hoagie shop, naturally)
about one month after arriving
in the city. Marilyn and I got
married in'73 and have been
together ever since. We have
moved around a lot. We stayed in
Philly for ten years, then it
was on
(briefly) to Bethlehem, New
Hampshire; Santa Barbara,
California (for graduate
school); Eugene, Oregon; Dallas,
Texas; and then finally to San
Francisco. We have one child,
Michael, who's now living in
Brooklyn and works in the South
Bronx for United Cerebral Palsy
Foundation, managing outpatient
cases.
I work at Palo Alto Research
Center ('PARC' - formerly Xerox
PARC), where I do ethnographic
studies of people at work.
I'm currently leading a project
based in Japan, and spend about
half of each month in Tokyo.
Before coming to PARC, I was on
the faculty of the University of
Oregon for 12 years. But before
all that, before all the
schooling and such, I drove a
taxicab for six years in
Philadelphia, which was
excellent preparation for
everything since. I
started playing baseball sims in
'64, with the APBA board game,
then moved on to the board
version of Pursue the Pennant
when it first came out and
finally to the computer version
of PTP and then DMB. I'm in two
DMB leagues at present. |
